The lime produced is mainly used in the making of mortars, concretes, and exterior plasters, in addition to being a key material in hydraulic works such as cisterns and ponds. However, from the 1960s onwards, with the introduction of cement and synthetic paints, lime production in Fuerteventura began to decline. Despite this, lime is still valued for its unique properties, such as its ability to keep water fresh in storage tanks and its usefulness in historical restorations. The old industrial kilns now remain as monuments of a bygone era, reminders of an economic activity that was once central to the island.
